Colon Prep FAQs

Q: What should you do if you vomit or become nauseous while drinking the prep?

A: This is not uncommon for some patients. Take a 30 minute break or until nausea subsides, then restart and drink at a slower pace.  (There will be enough prep in your system, even if it seems like you vomited “all of the prep”)

Q: What do I do if my stools are not clear?

A: Once again, you have to purchase a bottle of the Magnesium Citrate to complete the evacuation process and then follow the instructions in the above question.

Q: Are there any tricks to help with the taste of the prep?

A: Adding Crystal Light to the prep, sucking on a lime or lemon (before and after each drink), chilling the prep or drinking the prep through a straw are ways that can help make the process a bit more tolerable as well as alternating the prep with a strong fruit juice such as pomegranate or blueberry.

Q: Can I mix my prep with a soft drink such as Sprite or 7-Up?

A: No, as it may alter the prep. However, you can drink clear liquids in between the glasses of the prep.

Q: I do not feel well or I have started my period, should I still come in?

A: If you have started your period, it will not interfere with the procedure. If you are very ill, please call the office and speak to a nurse.

Q: What if I drank all of the prep and I have not had a bowel movement?

A: Sometimes it takes 4-6 hours for the prep to take effect. Be patient, it will happen.
